The "Deja Brew" Moment
My house was staged and ready for buyers. Bright. Airy. Spotless.
I'd spent weeks getting everything perfect. Fresh paint. Decluttered closets. The kind of clean where you're afraid to actually live in your own home because someone might schedule a showing at any moment.
The kitchen looked brand new except…..
Record scratch.
My sink. Years of coffee love were written all over that splash guard. Dark stains. Grimy buildup. A sticky residue I didn't want to think too hard about.
My kitchen had a case of "Deja Brew," and it had been hiding in plain sight.
The Frustration Phase
I attacked it with everything I had.
Dish soap and a scrub brush. Barely made a dent.
Baking soda and vinegar. Fizzed impressively, accomplished nothing.
Magic eraser. Took off some surface grime, left the deep stains untouched.
Bleach, coffee machine cleaner, spray designed for rubber car mats, oven cleaner.
I started Googling. "How to clean garbage disposal splash guard." "Rubber flap won't come clean." "Why does my disposal still smell."
The internet had plenty of suggestions, most of which I'd already tried. And the comments were full of people just as frustrated as I was.
That's when I realized: this wasn't a me problem. This was an everyone problem. And nobody had actually solved it.
The Phone Call
Around the same time, I was on the phone with my friend Janet. She had tried and failed to clean the splashguard at her parent’s house.
"Why doesn't anyone make something for this?" she asked.
Good question.
The Experiment Begins
So we made our own.
What started as a frustrated DIY project turned into a full-blown kitchen chemistry experiment. We researched ingredients. We tested formulas. We bought supplies in bulk and mixed batches.
Some attempts were disasters. One formula separated overnight. Another smelled great but didn't actually clean anything. A few were too runny and just slid down the drain before they could do any work.
We learned a lot. Mostly that creating a product that actually works is harder than it looks.
But we kept at it. Different ratios. Different ingredients. Different application methods.
And then, finally, we landed on something that worked.
The Moment We Knew
I'll never forget the first time we tested the final formula on a really bad splash guard.
This thing was dark brown in spots. Stained. Sticky. The kind of buildup that makes you want to just replace the whole disposal instead of dealing with it.
We applied our formula, let it sit for a minute, and scrubbed.
The grime came off. Not just some of it but all of it. The rubber underneath was clean. Actually clean. Like it had just been installed.
We looked at each other and said the same thing: "We need to try this on more sinks."
So we did. Friends' houses. Family members. Anyone who'd let us near their garbage disposal. Every splash guard we cleaned came back looking practically new.
That's when we knew we had something worth sharing.
Why We Called It FreshFlap
Naming things is hard, especially when no one knows what that rubber black thing is called. We went through a lot of options. (Ask us about the rejected names sometime. Some were... not great.)
But "FreshFlap" just felt right.
Fresh, because that's the result: a kitchen that finally smells as clean as it looks.
Flap, because that's exactly what we're cleaning. No confusion. No fancy marketing speak. Just a product that does what it says.
What's In It
No harsh chemicals. No artificial fragrances. Nothing we wouldn't feel comfortable using in our own kitchens, around our own families and pets.
We're not a big corporation with a lab full of scientists. We're two friends who got frustrated, did a lot of research, and made something that actually solves the problem.
Who We Are
We're Katy and Janet.
We never expected a stubborn kitchen problem to turn into a business. But once we saw how well FreshFlap worked and how many people had the same frustration we did - we couldn't keep it to ourselves.
We're based in Texas. We make FreshFlap in small batches. And we still get excited every time someone sends us a before-and-after photo of their splash guard transformation.
